DAY 79 - Salad Support

I LOVE a great salad! It’s not my knowledge of the profound health benefits of a colorful, iceberg-free salad, I just LOVE them! The crunch, the textures, the greens, reds, and oranges. Nonetheless, there have been so many times when I have been both tired and hungry, looked in the refrigerator, and just couldn’t face trying to put one together.

Fortunately, I have a salad support partner, my wife, Joanne!

When we married in 1971, one of our treasured wedding gifts was a wooden salad bowl set. Many were the evenings we would come home from work, put on James Taylor or Carole King, and together make a hearty salad. There were times when one of us didn’t have the energy to make a salad, but rarely both of us. The energy of one would lift the other.

Whether it is walking, stretching, or preparing healthy food, a buddy or support team can be invaluable. To have found love, marriage and health support all in one, I am blessed.

To this day, we make beautiful salads together.

DAY 64 – I Will Vote for President Obama in 2012

It is true, I will vote for Obama in 2012, but the reason for this writing is to say that I think “we the people” are missing a really big boat.

I feel tension in my body; mostly in my gut. I feel pressed. I don’t feel powerless, but I see no easy answers; no quick fixes. We elected a brilliant President in 2008; one who cares about all people and about our planet, one who communicates in an artful and real way with individuals and with the world, but he’s not good enough for us; he’s not perfect. Of course, he can’t be perfect, because that’s not possible, but also because one man’s perfect is another man’s damned.

Most of us talk about doing unto others as we would have them do unto us, but nobody I know would want to be done unto like we are doing to Barack Obama.

It’s easy to understand folks talking bad about him when they: don’t believe in global warming, think that gays are sinners, are certain that the more nuclear weapons the better, support more tax breaks for the wealthy, or insist that he is a Muslim.

But understanding the trash talkin’ of those who agree with the President on most important matters, including, and right down to the less important fact that he is a Christian, is a bit more complicated.

One would think that Americans that have been married, or in a committed relationship, would understand the enormous amount of compromise that must occur between two people. Giving those same Americans the benefit of the doubt, one would expect that they would realize that the amount of compromise that would be necessary during a presidency must be staggering; running a country, being a little more complex than marriage.

As I write this, it finally dawns on me ... perhaps all this does make sense; whenever our President does other than we wish, we Americans want to throw the bum out, and, maybe out of the same confused reasoning ... we Americans can’t seem to stay married either.

If this honeymoon and marriage were to end in 2012, America would be the loser.

DAY 34 – Marriage – A Couple on the Street

A Couple on the Street

linked by marriage
separated by physical space
one slightly ahead
one slightly behind
buffered by calluses that have formed around their hearts
and by the hardening of their bodies

but in my imagination, and theirs,
they are hand in hand, smiling, glowing
and spontaneously stopping from time to time
embracing, to relieve the pressure of the expanding joy in their hearts
thereby releasing that energy into one another

what is,….. need not be
In the beginning, hearts are soft

DAY 33 – Marriage: So Romantic, but Such Poor Odds

Most folks really want to be married; happily married. Even of those who divorce, many continue to try again and again. The draw to be half of a couple is potent.

At age five, marriage was not on my mind, I know because I remember asking my Mom if I could stay with her forever. She assured me that I could. Somewhere between there and my first girlfriend at age 14, something changed. I don’t think that it was a thought process; cuz I don’t remember thinking about it. Whatever happened, it was powerful, because 5 years later I was married at 19. (photo above)

Surely, there are many factors that, like the Sirens sweetly singing, draw us to marriage,  but what I am interested in here is not what calls us to marriage, but why, with such potent forces moving us, we fail so consistently to stay married.

It is commonly said that 50% of marriages end in divorce. Data from the Centers for Disease Control show that in 2009 there were 2,077,000 marriages in the US, and 1, 038,500 divorces. If that trend were to hold, then the 50% figure is bang on.

Years ago, finding marriage and failed marriage fascinating, I began asking young engaged couples a single question: “Given that your desire is to remain married until death do you part, and given that 50% of marriages end in divorce, what is your plan for being in the staying-together 50%?”

Most couples I interviewed had no answer; apparently having given it no thought.

Of those that did have an answer, a common one was that the partners would remain married because they really loved one another. I don’t know how convincing that is for you, but I would call that answer romantic at best.

Some couples had clearly given it some thought, and believed that their commitment to maintain open communication would carry them through. While an important and undoubtedly critical part of a successful marriage, I have seen a lot of marriages with the same spoken commitment, go up in flames.

My advice for those considering, or embarking on what they hope will be a satisfying, lifelong relationship, is as follows:
1)     Understand that creating and maintaining a healthy marriage is not easy; it is not like falling off a log,
2)     Consider routine maintenance counseling throughout your marriage; even when it seems like nothing is wrong,
3)     Learn about, and dedicate some time and energy to practicing Nonviolent Communication (NVC). It could be the difference between getting what you want, and wishing you had.
4)     Romance is beautiful and powerful, but on its own, gives poor odds.

DAY 5 - A Day Late

So, this, October 10, is day 6 of my year-long book project, and here I am a day late. You might be surprised. You might be wondering, “Wow, is this guy serious about this book? Just started, and he is off the mark!” Well, I am not surprised; but I’ve been living with me for the last 59 years.

As we, my wife Joanne and I, snuggled into bed last night, pooped, as usual, she asked, “Did you post your book entry for today?” Well, I hadn’t. I consistently bite off a bit more than I can chew. This last week included the usuals of trying to keep up with self-care (sleep, yoga, healthy food), and my full-time chiropractic practice, and also included a CPR  (Citizens for Peaceful Resolutions – http://c-p-r.net) general meeting on homelessness, a CPR board meeting, and hours of preparation for the Earth Charter Summit and Awards in Ventura (http://www.facebook.com/home.php?#!/EarthCharter).  Yesterday, DAY 5, started with final prep for the Earth Charter event, moved quickly to treating patients in the office, transitioned to a participation in the Earth Charter event, followed by clean-up and heading home at 7 PM.

The reason that it is OK for me to be behind is because I feel good about what I chose that behinds me. There will always be important, if not critical needs in the world that I will consider in my life’s triage.

So, here is my DAY 5 posting:

In the months leading up to the launch of this book, I began to create an outline of topics that I will address during the year. Below you will find the current outline. At this moment I have approximately 25 subheadings; each of those with multiple subjects to explore. Be assured, this outline will morph in the process.

I do not expect to address these topics in any order. I plan to go with my flow. It is my intent to address government on a number of occasions in these next weeks leading up to our national election in the US on Tuesday, November 2nd.
